Dplus KIA’s jungler, Kim “Canyon” Geon-bu, has quickly made a name for himself in the LCK since his debut in 2019. From academy player to key member of Dplus KIA’s main team, Canyon has achieved significant success in a short time. With three LCK titles and a 2020 Worlds Championship title under his belt, he believes he’s still a cut above the rest.
Canyon’s Journey to Professionalism
Canyon’s early passions took an unexpected turn, as revealed in a biographical YouTube video by Dplus KIA. Despite childhood dreams of becoming a police officer and a talent for painting, he found himself captivated by video games. Skipping Taekwondo classes and academic commitments, he discovered his natural aptitude for gaming.
Starting in grade 5 or 6, Canyon began playing games at the urging of a friend. It was during middle school that he realized his true potential, reaching the Challenger rank by high school. This realization solidified his aspiration to become a professional player.
At 17, he made the bold move to Seoul to pursue his dreams. Despite facing parental disapproval, he signed his first contract at 18, taking control of his own destiny. One of the Damwon coaching staff noticed him during ranked games, leading to his adoption of the name “Canyon,” inspired by the word “rift.”
Renowned as a jungle prodigy, Canyon quickly rose through the ranks and joined the main roster shortly after his debut. However, his journey wasn’t without its challenges. A lackluster start in his first LCK Spring in 2019 resulted in his temporary replacement. But Canyon’s unwavering mental strength and composure allowed him to overcome this setback.
What Sets Canyon Apart
Canyon’s defining trait is his composure. Even in the face of adversity, he remains level-headed and focused on personal growth. He spends countless hours playing the game, refusing to rest until he feels he has made significant progress. His deep understanding of both macro and micro aspects of the game sets him apart from other junglers.
Confident in fights, Canyon’s ability to quickly predict his opponents’ moves gives him an edge. However, despite his achievements, he remains humble and believes there are many talented junglers out there. He doesn’t consider himself significantly better than others.
With his determination and skill, Canyon continues to make a name for himself in the professional League of Legends scene. Fans eagerly anticipate his future performances and the impact he will have on the game.
