Hwei Support: Breaking the Mid Lane Mold
League of Legends players are known for their experimentation, and Hwei support is no exception. While Hwei is traditionally a male mage designed for the mid lane, his utility and crowd control abilities make him an intriguing choice for the support role. Riot Games’ Game Designer, Myles “Emizery” Salholm, shares the company’s position on Hwei support in a recent roundtable with the media.
The Loaded Kit of Hwei
Hwei’s kit is incredibly versatile, making it difficult to restrict him to a single lane. With three different stances, Hwei possesses a total of 10 unique spells at his disposal. His Serenity spells provide significant benefits to the team, such as increasing movement speed with Fleeting Current (WQ) and granting a shield that grows over time with the Pool of Reflection (WW).
Tormenting Enemies and Protecting Allies
On the offensive side, Hwei’s Torment spells are designed to torment his opponents on the Rift. Grim Visage (EQ) causes the first enemy hit to flee briefly, similar to abilities seen in champions like Vex and Fiddlesticks. Additionally, Gaze of the Abyss (EW) not only roots enemies but also grants vision. For those who prefer a more aggressive playstyle, Crushing Maw (EE) can displace enemies, pulling them towards the center while applying a slow.
Hwei Support: Viable or Not?
Riot Emizery believes that Hwei can be a viable support pick. The company has no plans to restrict his potential in this role. However, it is important to note that Hwei’s true strength lies in the mid lane, where he can acquire the necessary gold and experience to maximize his potential. Mage champions designed for mid often rely on AP ratios that scale with items, which may hinder their performance as supports due to lower base values compared to traditional enchanters.
Balancing Hwei’s Viability
Riot Games acknowledges that if Hwei becomes too strong as a support and it negatively impacts his win rate and pick rate in the mid lane, they will take appropriate action. The goal is to ensure that Hwei remains viable in both roles without overshadowing his intended position.
