Easter eggs and triumphs: The music video of Worlds 2023 song ‘Gods’ chronicles Deft’s career

Phyre Kimble

The music video for the Worlds 2023 song “Gods” by NewJeans has been released. It takes fans on a journey through the highs and lows of Korean bot laner Kim “Deft” Hyuk-kyu’s life before he became a World Champion. The four-minute video is filled with Easter eggs and references that showcase key moments from his career, including interactions with some of the most memorable players in the scene.

Faker and Deft attended the same high school together

The music video starts with Deft heading to school on a chilly winter morning. Inside the classroom, we spot T1 star player, Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok, seated just a few chairs away from Deft. Both Faker and Deft attended Mapo High School and started their professional careers around the same time back in 2013.

Faker’s Zed during Worlds 2013

The video transitions to a scene where Deft witnesses Faker defeating the Baron Nashor with Zed’s loadout. This moment pays homage to Faker’s performance in game two of the Worlds 2013 final, where his mastery of Zed helped SK Telecom T1 secure their first-ever World Championship title.

Deft’s room includes an alpaca plush

Deft’s bedroom is adorned with various Easter eggs, including an alpaca plush on his bed. This is a playful reference to Caster Christopher “MonteCristo” Mykles’ humorous comparison of Deft to an alpaca due to their similar physical traits. Deft himself has acknowledged the resemblance, stating that he shares not only looks but also personality traits with alpacas.

PawN versus Deft at Worlds 2014

The video highlights the matchup between PawN’s Jayce from Samsung White and Deft’s Lucian from Samsung Blue during Worlds 2014. PawN’s elimination of Deft in the semifinals dashed his hopes of lifting the Summoner’s Cup, as Samsung White went on to become World Champions.

Rekkles’ Kennen at Worlds 2015

The music video includes a reference to Martin “Rekkles” Larsson’s iconic Kennen performance during Worlds 2015. Although the scene doesn’t precisely recreate what happened in the quarterfinals, it pays tribute to Rekkles’ contribution to eliminating Deft from contention.

Facing DAMWON Gaming at Worlds 2020

The video pays tribute to Deft’s encounter with DAMWON Gaming at Worlds 2020. It showcases a scene where Deft, now a member of DRX, faces off against DAMWON Gaming’s Canyon and ShowMaker. Unfortunately, this series resulted in another quarterfinals exit for Deft.

DRX winning Worlds 2022

In the closing scene of the music video, all five members of DRX’s winning roster are featured. Deft, Kingen, Pyosik, Zeka, and BeryL each hold a weapon corresponding to the champion they used in their final game against T1 at Worlds 2022. This was the year when Deft finally achieved his lifelong dream of lifting the Summoner’s Cup and defeating his former schoolmate Faker in a thrilling 3-2 victory. It was also the first time in League of Legends esports history that a Play-In team won the championship.
