Genshin Impact voice actor Christian Banas recently shared his experience of auditioning for the role of Thoma during the CONQuest Festival 2022 in Manila, Philippines. Banas, who is Filipino-American, discussed his journey to becoming the English voice of the Pyro housekeeper and how he initially auditioned for a different character.
Before landing the role of Thoma, Banas revealed that he went through several auditions for Genshin Impact, including one for a 5-star character. Initially, he auditioned for NPC roles but was unsure about pursuing a career in voice acting. However, after interacting with other Genshin voice actors and playing the game himself, Banas became more interested in the field.
One month after the game’s release in 2020, Banas reached Adventure Rank 36 and started playing co-op with Genshin voice director Chris Faeilla and voice actors Jennifer Losi (Ganyu) and Cory Yee (Gorou). In early 2021, Banas received his first playable character audition for Kazuha. Although he didn’t get the role, he praised Mark Whitten’s performance and noted their similar interpretations of the Anemo samurai.
Despite the disappointment, Banas remained optimistic and continued auditioning. When the next batch of Genshin characters was announced, Banas auditioned for Thoma, while his colleagues Losi and Yee thought he would be a good fit for Gorou. However, the roles were reversed, and Banas was cast as Thoma, while Yee voiced Gorou.
Banas recorded approximately 40 hours of voice-over work for Thoma over three weeks. He believes that going through multiple auditions and roles is part of the process and advises aspiring voice actors to keep auditioning and stay true to themselves.
Overall, Banas’s journey to becoming the voice of Thoma in Genshin Impact showcases the perseverance and dedication required in the voice acting industry.
