The lead actor of the One Piece live action series, Inaki Godoy, surprised fans by embarking on an epic adventure to live out his pirate dreams. In preparation for his role as Monkey D. Luffy, Inaki decided to fully immerse himself in the character by going on a lengthy voyage at sea.
Instead of simply traveling for leisure, Inaki joined the crew of a ship sailing around the Caribbean, an area of the Atlantic Ocean bordered by Mexico and Central America. During this journey, he took on various tasks such as cooking and cleaning, and even had the responsibility of navigating the ship to the next island.
Inaki’s approach to preparing for his role as Luffy involved method acting, where he aimed to understand and experience the life of a pirate firsthand. Similar to Luffy’s adventurous spirit, Inaki set sail on his own for a total of 80 days, exploring the sea like Nami, cooking his own meals like Sanji, and possibly even defending himself and his crew like Zoro and Usopp.
One of Inaki’s motivations for this grand adventure was his younger sister, Mia, who has been sailing the seas for over a year. Inspired by her experiences, Inaki embarked on his own journey to gain a deeper understanding of the pirate lifestyle.
After starting his trip on February 6, Inaki returned home on April 25, 2023, just in time for the promotion of the Netflix series. Prior to landing the role of Monkey D. Luffy, Inaki appeared in other Netflix series such as “Who Killed Sara?” and “The Imperfects.” However, his portrayal of Luffy is his most significant role to date.
Monkey D. Luffy is the main protagonist in Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece franchise, which follows the story of a pirate who aspires to become the king of pirates and find the legendary treasure left behind by Gol D. Roger.
