Riot Games Makes History with K-pop Group NewJeans for Worlds 2023 Anthem
Riot Games, the creators of League of Legends, have made a groundbreaking decision by partnering with K-pop sensation NewJeans for the official anthem of Worlds 2023, titled “Gods.” This collaboration marks the first time a K-pop act has been chosen to sing the tournament’s anthem, creating a significant milestone in both esports and pop culture.
Maria Egan, the Global Head of Music and Events at Riot, revealed the reasoning behind selecting NewJeans for this prestigious opportunity. During the Worlds 2023 finals media day, Maria explained that they wanted to pay homage to the host country by featuring a K-pop artist on the anthem. Additionally, NewJeans’ remarkable rise to global fame impressed Riot, making them the perfect choice for the collaboration. Maria described “Gods” as a traditional and iconic League anthem sound but with a fresh twist, which NewJeans was enthusiastic about bringing to life.
NewJeans, consisting of Danielle, Hanni, Haerin, Hyein, and Minji, is ADOR’s sensational all-girl group. They made their debut in 2022 and quickly achieved the remarkable feat of becoming the first K-pop band to reach the million-seller milestone with their debut album, “New Jeans.” The group is renowned for their chart-topping hits such as “Attention,” “Hype Boy,” “OMG,” and “Super Shy.”
