Go “Score” Dong-bin, a League of Legends veteran, has made a successful transition from pro player to coach in the LCK. Leading Gen.G, he has achieved three consecutive LCK championships in Summer 2022, Spring 2023, and Summer 2023.
Despite facing roster changes in the bot lane, with the departure of Worlds 2017 champion Park “Ruler” Jae-hyuk and support Son “Lehends” Si-woo, Score took a chance on rookie Kim “Peyz” Su-hwan and former Gen.G academy player Yoo “Delight” Hwan-joong as replacements. Despite concerns about a potential downgrade, Gen.G defied expectations and swept T1 twice in the LCK Spring and Summer grand finals to claim the championship. They also achieved 3rd-4th place at Worlds 2022 and 4th place at MSI 2023.
In an exclusive interview with ONE Esports, Score discusses his personal challenges and shares insights into his coaching philosophy and experience as a pro player. He identifies integrating a player without prior LCK experience as his greatest challenge this year. However, through detailed coaching on lane management, rookie Peyz quickly adapted and made the transition smoother than anticipated.
Handling conflict is another aspect of coaching that Score has had to navigate. He believes in acknowledging that mistakes are inevitable and prefers individual meetings followed by group discussions to address concerns and prevent negativity from festering.
As a coach, Score faces the constant challenge of navigating the unpredictability of long seasons. Practice sessions are not always straightforward, and unexpected hurdles can disrupt the team’s rhythm. However, he has developed comprehensive solutions to address morale setbacks and internal conflicts.
Score’s coaching style and solutions have proven effective, as Gen.G has consistently maintained top positions in the LCK and achieved top-four finishes internationally. He attributes this success to open communication, understanding, and a focus on minimizing stress while preparing the team for playoffs.
While Score does not currently have a coaching mentor, he values the lessons learned from various coaches throughout his career. He particularly admires retired KT Rolster coach Jeong “Noex” Jae-seung for his personalized approach to player management.
Having spent time in the army, Score gained crucial introspection that helped shape his leadership style. In 2021, he officially retired as a pro player and signed with Gen.G in November of the same year.
As a former rival of T1, Score finds fulfillment in leading Gen.G to victory against them. He believes his strength lies in pushing players to reach their fullest potential and guiding them to perform at their best.
Score’s coaching journey has been rewarding, and he feels a sense of accomplishment when competing in large venues during the LCK split finals. He is confident that he made the right choice in becoming a coach.
