I had the opportunity to attend Gamescom 2023 in Germany and got a firsthand experience of the gameplay for Song of Nunu. Let me tell you, it quickly became one of the highlights of my trip.
As a dedicated League of Legends player, I was initially skeptical about why Riot Forge and Tequila Works chose to create a whole game centered around one of the least popular champions in the game. With only 11 skins compared to the nearly 20 skins of more popular champions like Lux and Ahri, I couldn’t help but wonder what would make this game appealing to someone like me who has no emotional attachment to Nunu and Willump.
However, I was pleasantly surprised by the gameplay of Song of Nunu. It was not only incredibly cute but also surprisingly fun. The game was designed to be forgiving, with no harsh punishments for mistakes. If you miss a jump or fall, you can simply replay it without any consequences.
During the demo, there were a few challenging jumps that I struggled with. Even the Tequila Works Associate Game Producer had some difficulty making them. It’s possible that these jumps may not make it into the final game, but the developers assured me that the overall experience would remain enjoyable and accessible.
The game offers various mechanics, such as climbing rocks, removing obstacles, sledding through the snow, and playing the flute. One standout feature is the ability to create terrain with snowballs, a nod to Nunu’s original champion design from 2009.
In one instance, we encountered a river and used Nunu to throw snowballs onto the water, freezing it and allowing Willump to walk across the frozen ice. We even froze a waterfall while hanging off a cliff, transforming it into passable terrain. These puzzles are interspersed with dialogue and interactions between Nunu and Willump, providing insight into their past and the reason for their journey together.
Despite my initial lack of attachment to these characters, I could feel the love and care that Tequila Works put into developing their relationship. The bond between Nunu and Willump was evident, and it melted away any preconceived notions I had about them as just another League of Legends champion.
To top it all off, there’s a dedicated “hug button” in the game. Pressing it allows Nunu and Willump to embrace each other, adding an extra touch of warmth and fuzziness to the experience.
Overall, Song of Nunu offers a surprisingly enjoyable and adorable gameplay experience. It manages to capture the essence of Nunu and Willump’s relationship while providing fun mechanics and puzzles. Whether you’re a die-hard Nunu fan or someone like me who didn’t give them much thought before, this game has the potential to win you over with its charm.
