The Korean e-Sports Association (KeSPA) kicked off the 2022 Asian Games Hangzhou ceremony at Seoul City Hall in August 2023.
The South Korean national team, led by esports legend T1’s midlaner Lee “Faker” Sang-hyuk, was introduced for the regional League of Legends competition.
The roster includes top players such as top laner Choi “Zeus” Woo-je and support Ryu “Keria” Min-seok. The team is further strengthened by the formidable JDG representatives, jungler Seo “Kanavi” Jin-hyeok and bot laner Park “Ruler” Jae-hyuk. Gen.G’s mid laner Jeong “Chovy” Ji-hoon also joins this impressive lineup.
The event was attended by notable figures, including sponsors who have played a crucial role in supporting the esports ecosystem. The Mayor of Seoul, Oh Se-hoon, added prestige and excitement to the proceedings.
Faker’s Playful Remark Delights the Crowd
After the ceremony, a press conference took place where Faker humorously responded to a question about his food preferences. He jokingly expressed his desire to “eat more than plain white bread.”
Faker recalled the last Asian Games where he and his teammates were limited to only one meal a day, often consisting of plain white bread. His comment reflected a hope for improved conditions in the upcoming tournament.
KeSPA Addresses Preparation Concerns
In response to Faker’s remarks, Kim Chul-hak, KeSPA’s secretary-general, promptly addressed the concerns. He acknowledged the challenges faced during the 2018 tournament and pledged comprehensive support for the South Korean esports team.
Kim presented a plan for the upcoming games, which included the establishment of a conveniently located base camp near the stadium. This camp aims to provide athletes with an environment conducive to peak performance, focusing on nutrition, acclimatization, and rest.
The secretary-general emphasized the availability of spaces for relaxation and mobility, along with access to Korean cuisine that caters to players’ dietary preferences.
Kim assured that KeSPA is fully prepared for the first official esports competition, highlighting their commitment to ensuring optimal conditions for the athletes.
