The International 2023: Dota 2’s Ultimate Showdown Returns to Seattle

Samuel Crossley

The biggest event in the Dota 2 calendar, The International, is back in its hometown of Seattle after a hiatus since 2017. This year’s tournament promises an exciting clash of new and established teams, all vying for the prestigious Aegis of Champions and a multi-million dollar prize pool.

What is The International 2023?

The International is the pinnacle of competitive Dota 2, serving as the season-ending tournament. Taking place from October 12 to 29, it brings together 20 teams from around the world to battle it out for glory.

Teams Competing in TI12

A total of 20 teams have qualified for The International 2023. Twelve teams secured their spots through exceptional performances in the Dota Pro Circuit, including the three-time Major winners, Gaimin Gladiators. The remaining eight teams earned their places through regional qualifiers, with South America and Western Europe receiving two slots each due to their strong showings in the DPC.

TI12 Tournament Format

TI12 follows a similar schedule to the previous edition in Singapore, with three distinct stages: the Group Stage, Playoffs, and the Finals. However, there are some changes to the format this year.

In the Group Stage, instead of two large groups, there will be four groups of five teams each. The last-placed team in each group will be eliminated, while the remaining teams will proceed to head-to-head matches. This means that every match in the group stage carries significant weight.

Once the Group Stage concludes, the top 16 teams will advance to the Playoffs. Unlike previous years, there will be no lower-bracket best-of-one matches. Instead, all 16 teams will compete in at least one best-of-three series, giving them a chance to fight for their tournament lives.

The top teams from the Playoffs will then advance to the Finals, where they will battle it out for the ultimate prize.
