Parents worry when they see “Bleach” in their children’s search history, but it’s usually because they are looking for the popular anime and manga series by Tite Kubo. While “Bleach cleaner” gets about 210 million results on Google, “Bleach anime” and “Bleach manga” have a combined 300 million hits.
Why did Kubo choose to name the series “Bleach”?
Shonen animes often have simple titles, like One Piece, Naruto, Dragon Ball, and Demon Slayer. Kubo initially called his series “Snipe,” envisioning Soul Reapers in kimonos using guns. However, when he abandoned the gun idea, he had to change the name too.
Kubo then considered naming the series “Black” after the iconic clothes worn by the Soul Reapers. But he found it too generic and tried “White” instead. Eventually, he settled on “Bleach” – a common household cleaner associated with the color white due to its ability to remove color from clothing.
Later in the manga, Kubo named a chapter “Bleach My Soul,” which dealt with Aizen’s imprisonment and Ichigo’s loss of powers after their epic battle in the Arrancar saga. This suggests that the title could also mean removal, reflecting the Soul Reapers’ duty to cleanse Hollows and send Pluses to the Soul Society, thereby purifying the Human World.
