Gumayusi: The Rise of a Dominant Force in League of Legends Esports

superadmin

Since bursting onto the scene in 2020, Lee “Gumayusi” Min-hyeong has established himself as a dominant force in the world of League of Legends esports. With his impressive performances and numerous accolades, including winning the LCK Spring 2022 championship with T1, Gumayusi has proven himself to be a formidable player.

Starting out as a rookie with a dream to make a name for himself in the Korean esports scene, Gumayusi faced many challenges and struggles along the way. In the T1 documentary “Gumayusi’s Climb | CARVED: PROVE,” he reflects on his early days as an aspiring pro player.

Back in 2017, when Gumayusi first achieved Challenger rank, he caught the attention of top-tier esports organizations in South Korea. He was initially recruited by Afreeca (later renamed Kwangdong Freecs) as a trainee, but just before signing a contract, T1 approached him with an offer.

Without hesitation, Gumayusi chose T1 over Afreeca, despite feeling a bond with the latter. He joined T1 as a trainee in 2018 and later became a substitute player in 2020, with Park “Teddy” Jin-seong holding the starting bot laner position.

There came a point when T1 suggested a role swap for Gumayusi, proposing that he move to the top lane since there were no anticipated changes in the ADC role in their roster. Although he seriously considered the switch, Gumayusi ultimately decided to stick with his passion for the ADC role.

Despite facing frustration and disappointment at times, Gumayusi remained dedicated and determined. He contemplated leaving T1 but ultimately chose to re-sign with the team. It took three years from the time he first joined as a trainee for him to secure his spot in the starting roster for the 2021 season.

Since then, Gumayusi has achieved numerous milestones in the League of Legends esports scene. He has also made podium finishes in international tournaments, narrowly missing out on first place against DRX at Worlds 2022 and against RNG at MSI 2022, settling for second place in both competitions.
