It’s been a year since Morgana was last adjusted, and four years since her ultimate ability, Soul Shackles, received any changes. However, in the latest League of Legends patch 13.20, Riot Games has finally decided to give her some buffs. While this is good news for Morgana players, it does come with a nerf to her Black Shield ability, which may not be ideal for support mains.
Riot Games acknowledged that Morgana has been feeling weak for quite some time now. However, they have been hesitant to buff her due to her high ban rate in solo queue. In this patch, they have decided to buff her ultimate ability, Soul Shackles, to ensure it remains impactful as the game progresses. They have also slightly increased the cooldown of her E ability, Black Shield, to provide more opportunities for crowd control supports to interact with her. Additionally, they have provided buffs to the scaling of her W ability to benefit her midlane and jungle roles.
Here are the specific changes made to Morgana’s abilities in patch 13.20:
W – Tormented Shadow:
– Magic Damage per Second increased from 12/22/32/42/52 (+14% AP) to 12/22/32/42/52 (+17% AP)
– Monster Damage Modifier increased from 155% to 165%
E – Black Shield:
– Cooldown increased from 24/22/20/18/16 seconds to 26/23.5/21/18.5/16 seconds
R – Soul Shackles:
– Bonus Movement Speed changed and increased from 5/30/55% while facing towards tethered enemies to 10/35/60% in all directions
– Stun Duration increased from 1.5 seconds at all ranks to 1.5/1.75/2 seconds
– Magic Damage increased from 150/225/300 (+70% AP) to 175/250/325 (+80% AP) (Note: this will still hit twice, once upon initial cast and a second time when the tether stuns)
The increase in AP scaling for Tormented Shadow primarily benefits midlane Morgana. However, her build options are still limited as she relies on defensive items like Zhonya’s Hourglass, Rylai’s Crystal Scepter, and Demonic Embrace.
The significant buff to her W ability is the increase in monster damage modifier, which will greatly enhance jungle Morgana’s clear speed.
The ultimate ability, Soul Shackles, receives two major buffs. Firstly, Morgana will now gain more movement speed during her ultimate regardless of the direction she is facing. This improvement makes it easier for her to keep her shackles on enemies and increases the reward for successfully landing the ability. Secondly, the stun duration now scales with level, reaching a maximum of two seconds. This is excellent news for Morgana players in any role.
However, the nerf to Black Shield may pose a challenge for support Morgana mains. The base cooldown of the ability has been increased at all levels, requiring players to be more conservative in its usage.
Overall, these changes are expected to significantly enhance Morgana’s power spike at level six and provide an overall buff for all roles.
