The League of Legends Worlds 2023 Swiss Stage kicked off with an exciting match between South Korea’s T1 and North America’s Team Liquid in a best-of-one game, showcasing the clash of these two major leagues.
T1 is the second seed from LCK, qualifying through championship points. They finished second in both LCK Spring and Summer playoffs 2023, and third in MSI 2023.
Team Liquid qualified after finishing third in LCS 2023 Championship, following NRG Esports and Cloud9.
In the early game, T1 faced difficulties keeping up with Pyosik’s swift responses on Lee Sin in both the top and bot lanes.
As the game progressed into the mid and late game stages, Team Liquid attempted to isolate and pick off T1 players, but struggled to bridge the gold gap.
After successfully taking down the second Baron Nashor at the 30-minute mark, Team Liquid managed to catch up to T1 in terms of gold, evening the playing field.
The game dragged on into the late game with no clear winner in sight, until a significant development occurred in the midlane.
Team Liquid’s Summit overextended while playing K’Sante, creating an opening for T1 to initiate a clash.
Summit was caught by Keria’s Renata Glasc and subjected to crowd control abilities from the rest of T1. However, it was Gumayusi’s well-timed Ashe arrow that hit APA at the backline that truly turned the tide in T1’s favor.
With a 4v5 advantage, T1 swiftly coordinated their moves and decimated most of Team Liquid’s members, leaving only Summit to be relentlessly pursued by Gumayusi.
Following this result, T1 secured their first victory in the Worlds 2023 Swiss Stage in 36 minutes and 28 seconds. They now need two more wins to secure a spot in the Knockout Stage.
