Treinding

Will there be another underdog story at Worlds 2023?

Kelly Young

Our power rankings for the ONE Esports Worlds 2023 will provide insights into the top teams competing in the League of Legends world championship. This year, the tournament features a new format, with a swiss format replacing the group stage, raising the stakes even higher. The playoffs will follow a single-elimination format, giving teams only one chance to advance.

Last year at Worlds 2022, DRX made history as the first Play-Ins team to reach the final and win the championship. They claimed victory with a 3-2 win over their fellow LCK rivals.

Let’s take a closer look at the top-ranked teams and what they are fighting for in our Worlds 2023 power rankings:

JD Gaming

JD Gaming is on the verge of achieving the “golden royal road.” They have already won LPL Spring 2023, MSI 2023, and LPL Summer 2023. The only thing left for them is the world championship. If they succeed, they will accomplish what no other team has done before, including SK Telecom T1 in their prime. The stakes have never been higher for JD Gaming, who fell short in the quarterfinals at Worlds 2020 and were eliminated by T1 at Worlds 2022. Can they go further this time?

Gen.G

Despite making changes to their bot lane this year, Gen.G has maintained their strong performance. With rookie Kim “Peyz” Su-hwan replacing Ruler, they secured an LCK title by defeating T1 in LCK Spring. They surprised everyone again by sweeping T1 in LCK Summer 2023. Gen.G has won three domestic titles in a row but has yet to translate that success to the international stage. After finishing 3rd-4th at Worlds 2021 and Worlds 2022, they are determined to make a breakthrough this year.

T1

This may be the last time we see the current lineup of T1 together. Gumayusi hinted that this could be their final tournament as a team. T1 has been consistently performing well, with multiple second-place finishes at various tournaments. They won LCK Spring 2022 and finished third at MSI 2023. Faker, one of the most legendary players in League of Legends, has a chance to win his fourth championship. However, T1 needs to overcome their second-place curse to claim the title.
