Zeus: T1’s Top Laner Shines Through Adversity

Samuel Crossley

Zeus, the top laner for T1’s League of Legends team, faced a tumultuous journey in 2023. Despite setbacks and challenges, he emerged as the Finals MVP in their victorious run as the 2023 Worlds champions.

Zeus’s Stealthy Rise Among Stars

Zeus’s contributions often went unnoticed amidst T1’s star-studded lineup. However, his performance in the LCK 2022 and 2023 Spring split group stages went unnoticed, with low MVP points. Similar patterns occurred in the split playoffs, where he had zero MVP points in 2022 and only one in 2023.

During the first half of the LCK Summer group stages, Zeus struggled against KT’s top laner, Kiin, admitting that he was outperformed. This was reflected in his statistics, with negative assistance and a significant difference in damage per minute (DPM).

An embarrassing moment occurred during the 2023 Mid-Season Invitational when Zeus made a crucial mistake contributing to T1’s defeat in the semifinals.

Faker’s Return and T1’s Redemption Arc

Faker’s return from his wrist injury marked a turning point for Zeus and T1. Zeus’s performance improved, earning him the most MVP points during the 2023 LCK Summer split and playoffs.

His success extended beyond the LCK, as he secured a gold medal at the Asian Games, exempting him from Korea’s mandatory military service.

Zeus’s prowess in the top lane shone during T1’s World Championship campaign. He faced formidable opponents from the LPL, including Bin from BLG, 369 from JDG, and TheShy from WBG. His performance against these top laners played a crucial role in T1’s victory, earning him the title of Worlds Finals MVP.

Zeus’ Toplaner Stats Difference against LPL Opponents

Opponent KDA CSM DPM
Bin (BLG) +2.5 +3.8 +344
369 (JDG) +0.9 -1.0 +127
TheShy (WBG) +7.9 +2.9 +318

Reflecting on his accomplishments, Zeus humbly stated in a post-match interview, “At a young age, I have achieved a lot. I understand that things can go wrong, so I won’t become overly confident and will strive to do better.”
